Bevill State Community College is part of the Alabama community, junior, and technical college system established by Act No. 93 of the State Legislature on May 3, 1963. Act No. 94 subsequently delegated the operation and maintenance responsibility of Alabama's two-year colleges to the State Board of Education. Following the consolidation of two prestigious institutions, Bevill State Community College was founded in 1992 in accordance with the original legislative framework. The merging entities were Walker State Technical College (Sumiton), founded in 1966 as a vocational/technical institution, and Brewer State Junior College (Fayette), a two-year academic transfer institution established in 1969. Additionally, the Hamilton Campus of Northwest Alabama Community College, primarily focused on vocational/technical education and founded in 1966, became one of Bevill State's primary campuses after merging in 1993. Walker College (Jasper), launching in 1938 as a two-year academic transfer college, completed the establishment of Bevill State's four-campus college in 1998. In 2007, the Pickens County Educational Center in Carrollton was constructed under the institution's expansion efforts.

Bevill State offers a diverse range of educational opportunities including academic transfer courses, career technical education, health sciences programs, adult education classes, workforce training, corporate education, and community education across its four main campuses and one instructional site. Its service area extends over 4600 square miles across seven counties, serving a population exceeding 200,000 individuals from Birmingham city limits to the Mississippi state line.
